FURNITURE STUDIO | SPRING 2018 | UNDERGRADUATE

Walnut Chair

Instructors: Penny Maulden, Steve Withycombe, Kimo Griggs, Christina Strand

Designed and constructed from start to finish in the University of Washington's fabrication lab, with guidance from UW instructors and visiting Danish instructor Christina Strand.

The studio traveled to Copenhagen for an intensive week studying the history of Scandinavian furniture design before returning to Seattle to design and build individual student pieces, each conceived as a family heirloom.

This design is constructed as solid walnut frame, with handmade walnut laminations in the seat and back. A simple, refined form outlines the legs, bottom, and back of a sitting person. The gentle gesture of the structure invites one to be drawn into the chair. All connections were carefully crafted using traditional handmade mortise and tenon joints.
